Apple iTunes 10.5 Review - This latest update to iTunes is all about iOS 5 and iCloud, which ironically, removes some of the need for iTunes itself. With iCloud, users of iPads, iPhones, and iPod touches will no longer need to sync to a PC running iTunes in order to update the device's OS or even to sync music, photos, or other media content to their other Apple devices. And if iDevice users still do want to sync to a computer, iTunes finally lets them do so wirelessly over Wi-Fi. Though you can play music and video in other apps, iTunes remains the media software to beat.

This latest update to iTunes is all about iOS 5 and iCloud, which ironically, removes some of the need for iTunes itself.

Part of the reason for this is that Apple just keeps improving on iTunes. Version 10 added Apple TV integration, TV show rentals, better app management and Ping, a Facebook-like music-oriented social network that lives inside the media player software. Version 10.2 added support for the iOS 4.3 operating system on iPod touch, iPhone, and iPad 2 ($499-$829, 4.5 stars), along with support for Home Sharing's streaming video to those devices. The wireless streaming feature, AirPlay lets you send music to compatible third-part audio devices—which are finally showing up. In version 10.3, Apple added the piece of iCloud called iTunes in the Cloud, which makes downloading music, apps, and books to multiple apps easier.

Other recent innovations still worthy of note include Genius playlists and Genius mixes. They automatically create playlists based on song styles and moods. iTunes LP is another, giving you liner notes, photos, and video to go along with an album. Its DJ feature lets you create a live mix in which friends can make requests and vote on songs. This is in addition to what other players give you—an equalizer, Internet radio, and podcast subscriptions.

ITunes is, of course, available for Mac OS X (version 10.5 or later), as well as Windows 7, Vista, and XP. If your PC is running a 64-bit version of Vista or Windows 7, you'll need to download the separate 64-bit installer. By default, the installer makes iTunes your default player for audio files, though you can uncheck this if you prefer Windows Media Player (Free, 4 stars), Winamp (Free, 4 stars), or another player.

After you install the software on a Mac, a setup assistant asks you questions that help it customize your installation. The Windows version asks you whether you want to add all songs, audio, and convert and add Windows Media Audio (WMA) files. You can also have iTunes organize your library by renaming files and moving them to the folders that match. A final privacy check asks if you want the app to download album art.
After you first launch iTunes, you're offered nine tutorials that cover topics ranging from the Ping service to iTunes U; these offer a good, simple way to get you started with unfamiliar features. One disappointment in starting up and signing into iTunes is that there's no easy way to switch among multiple accounts.
Apple doesn't add new file format support with this release, but I should note that the player software no longer requires a separate QuickTime installation to play media. You're still more likely to be able to play that difficult file in the excellent VLC media player (Free, 4 stars) media player, which supports over 20 video formats alone, compared with iTunes' seven.

Apple iPod Touch Review - The touch has developed with a lot of features beyond MP3 playback that we can no longer call it just as a music player. Some choose Touch for its wonderful mobile browser and email support, whereas others see it mainly as a handy gaming tool and only some flock towards the Touch for good old school video playback and music.

iPod Touch 3rd Generation

In 2010, Apple's fourth-generation iPod touch got two cameras—one for shooting HD videos and photos, one for FaceTime chats. In 2011, the changes to the iPod touch are all based on the new iOS 5, which brings with it iMessage, iCloud, notifications, and Game Center enhancements. Physically, the player is unchanged, except now it's offered in white. The high-res Retina display remains crisp, colorful, and highly responsive to touch. Since the iPod nano ($129, 3 stars) no longer supports video, the 8GB touch is the least-expensive video-playing iPod, starting at $199 direct—a $30 price drop from 2010. The other two models remain $299 (32GB) and $399 (64GB). Despite the hefty price, the iPod touch is still, by far, the best portable media player you can buy—and it retains our Editors' Choice.

Design
There's a new white model, which is white on the front face and mirrored on the back, but the touch retains its 2010 dimensions: 4.4 by 2.3 by 0.3 inches (HWD) and 3.6 ounces. Apple's custom A4 chip powers the device, and the super-sharp Retina display remains 3.5 diagonal inches and 960-by-640 pixels (at 326 pixels per inch). The touch's left-hand panel houses two Volume buttons. A headphone jack, a speaker, and a 30-pin connector for USB computer syncing are on the bottom of the player. The Power button sits up top, and the Home button remains below the display on the front panel. There are two camera lenses—one toward the top of the display, and one on the back, in the top left corner, which is accompanied by a mic. The mirrored back panel is excellent for checking your teeth on the sly, but it picks up fingerprints very easily.

For good or bad, the first ever thing that you will notice after unpacking the iPod Touch packing is that, the design remains unchanged from the 2nd generation model. We bet that you will not be able to make out any difference between both the models in just a couple of looks. Apart from the very negligible distinctions in the print at the rear of the device, the second gen model and the latest one are just the same as the other. If you have a look inside the casing, you will find that there had been a place for camera, which despite the photographic evidence to the contrary never made it to the final product, mainly as the last minute technical problems. There is no change in shape and dimensions either, between both the models and it remains to be (H x W x D) 4.3” x 2.4” x 0.33”. The glass display on the front of the model is flat with a curved steel backing, which feels natural and comfortable in hands, but is wobbly when placed in a flat surface.

User Interface
With the inclusion of iOS 5, the iPod touch now becomes a messaging device. It can also use the new iCloud function, which features iTunes in the Cloud, Photo Stream, and Documents in the Cloud, so you can share content wirelessly between your computer, your iPod touch, your iPhone, and your iPad. Another useful new feature is Notifications, which works with just about any relevant app to keep you informed about updates and friends' responses. For more about what iOS 5 can do, check out PCMag's full review, or read on here to discover some of the nuances that improve the iPod touch's performance.
Audio and Video
Navigating the music menus on the iPod touch is completely intuitive. First off, there are so many ways to do it—using CoverFlow, searching Artist or Song, or perusing playlists. Apple has made everything fast and easy—scroll song or artist lists by dragging a finger or skip ahead to a letter on the scrollable alphabet on the right side of the screen. The Now Playing view is a showcase for album art, and you can play music while you surf the Web, view photos, or even play games.
By itself, the iPod touch is a fine audio device—plug in a pair of good-quality headphones and you won't be disappointed with the frequency range and overall audio quality. To my continuing disappointment, Apple still offers its stock, subpar earbuds. Audiophiles listening to Lossless tracks on the touch will be best served by leaving the EQ off. The settings Apple provides are presets; there's still no user-customizable EQ. Extra features like Shake to Shuffle, Volume Limit, and Sound Check can all be enabled or disabled easily.
The iTunes Store can be accessed via Wi-Fi for on-the-spot music and video purchases. Video looks fantastic on the Retina display. YouTube and Netflix will not look as sharp as video purchased from the iTunes Store, of course, but the speed with which video can be cued up without stuttering is impressive. Again, this is dependent on the strength of your Wi-Fi signal.
The touch integrates Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR and 802.11b/g/n Wi-Fi, though 802.11n only operates on the 2.4GHz band. Nike+ iPod support is also included for those who want to use the touch to help keep in shape.
CameraThe rear-facing camera records video in HD (720p), up to 30fps, capturing audio through the rear panel mic. Still photos max out at 960 by 720 pixels. This amounts to less than a megapixel, and compared with the iPhone 4S ($199.99-$399.99, 4.5 stars) and its 8-megapixel rear camera, the quality in images is stark. (See the slideshow for a side-by-side comparison.) The front-facing camera, intended for FaceTime video chat, offers lower resolutions: VGA-quality for photos and videos, again, up to 30fps.
Camera operation couldn't be more intuitive. An onscreen slide control toggles between still and video camera modes, and an icon in the lower left takes you to your gallery, where you can peruse your photos and videos. Video footage plays back onscreen with a scroll tool that shows a thumbnail timeline of your footage, making skipping to a certain spot easy. You can trim your footage on the player by dragging your finder over the thumbnail timeline of the footage and selecting segments to cut.
Capturing video is achieved by pressing the red Record button onscreen when in video camera mode, and tapping it again to end recording. The screen acts as your viewfinder and everything moves along in real time without stuttering. Low-light situations will make for some noisy footage, but in well-lit scenarios, the touch's video looks colorful and crisp. Uploading your video to YouTube or sending it as an email attachment, provided you have a Wi-Fi connection, is made easy with a button in the lower left-hand corner of the screen that walks you through a streamlined process to do either.
Unlike the iPhone 4S's camera, the iPod touch's has no flash, which makes low-light—particularly back-lit—scenarios rather challenging. You get 5x digital zoom for photos, which is activated by moving the slider on the screen above the on-screen shutter button, but zooming in creates noticeable artifacts. Landscape shots in adequate lighting look decent for a camera built into a player, and well-lit portraits look sharper than you'd expect, provided you don't zoom in too far. Like videos, photos can be sent out immediately via email, or you can assign a photo to be your new wallpaper or a friend's contact photo, all by pressing the lower left-hand button when viewing your image.
Battery Life and Conclusions
Apple rates the battery life for the iPod touch at an impressive 40 hours for audio and seven hours for video. We ran two different battery rundown tests. Playing music with Wi-Fi off and Auto-Lock set to one minute, we got a great result: 47 hours and 25 minutes. Playing video with Wi-Fi on and the screen set to full brightness, we got 5 hours, 32 minutes of video playback. At half brightness, we got more than eight hours. That's enough for a good day's worth of use.
There are very few devices left that you can actually compare directly with the iPod touch, though both Sony and Samsung have announced, but not yet shipped Android-based PMPs. Many manufacturers have thrown in the towel and are taking on slightly less daunting targets, like the iPod nano or the iPod shuffle ($49, 3.5 stars), or are focusing on tablets instead. The only real problem with the touch is its high price—especially if you want a decent amount of storage. But with an entry point of $199, you do get a camera, HD video recording, messaging and video chat, a music and video player, portable gaming, the Web, email, and apps all in one slick, pocket-size package. It was true when it first debuted, and even more so now: No other portable media player can compete with the iPod touch.

Bookcase Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1" ORIGINAL - This is now my favorite case – the official Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 Leather Book Case, not that I’ve used that many cases. Just like the official Leather Pouch, the Leather Book Case feels incredibly high quality, yet it doesn’t feel like genuine leather, or even faux leather, it feels more like hard plastic. Despite that, there’s some weight to it, and it’s very sturdy so that contributes to the case’s quality feel.

The “Samsung” and “Galaxy Tab” logos can be found on the back, front and behind the flap. The front and back have some kind of texture which reminds me of that found on a nail file, except much finer and obviously with no uncomfortable feeling. The inside, behind the lid, that will cover the tablet screen is smooth so as to not damage the screen, while the tablet holder has a soft microfiber lining to protect the back of the tablet.
The coolest part of the case has the be the magnet flap. It’s very satisfying to have it close automatically.

Note that the case wasn’t designed to accommodate the tablet with a protective skin covering the sides. The tablet will be a tight squeeze but you may find your protective skin forced off around the snap on clips.
There are three angles you can place the tablet in. Two viewing angles and one typing angle. You can also lay the case flat with just a slight angle due to the bulge the flap gives. This bulge also makes it incredibly comfortable to hold the tablet with one hand. Sony’s upcoming tablet will actually integrate a bulge just like this.

There are openings for the camera on the back of the tablet, the headphone jack and the sides are exposed so the speakers do not get muffled.

Just to be clear, that $499.99 tag was attached to the 16GB Wi-Fi only version, so if you’re interested in 4G, be prepared to pay more and possibly wait a little longer. some sources are saying one model could launch as early as March.

Toshiba's Portege G910 / G920 Review - Probably because it's not that big of a player in the domestic cellphone space, Toshiba may not be familiar with all the ins and outs of FCC confidentiality agreements, as evidenced by its testing subcontractor leaving tons of juicy photos of the unannounced Portege G910 / G920 smartphones in those devices' recently-declassified applications. Tosh's blunder clues us in to a whole world of info about this followup to the WVGA, Windows Mobile 6 Portege G900, such as the fact that it's eschewing its predecessor's sliding form factor for the clamshell-design of the Nokia E90 (perhaps an answer to the tilting screen of HTC's TyTN II?)

Toshiba have finally presented all the details about the Toshiba Portege G910/G920 high-end PocketPC along with the Toshiba Portege G710 - a compact Windows Mobile smartphone. Both devices look interesting enough to challenge the HTC product lineup and we are yet to see how good they are with some hands-on experience - hopefully at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, February 2008.

The Toshiba Portege G910/G920 PocketPC has a clamshell form factor in an obvious attempt by Toshiba to make it look more of a mini-laptop. The Toshiba G910/G920 is armed with 3G and HSDPA, Wi-Fi and an integrated GPS receiver. Since both devices are based on a Qualcomm MSM7200 platform which is becoming increasingly popular in the HTC product portfolio too, the Toshiba G910 integrated Qualcomm GPS receiver benefits from the Qualcomm's gpsOneXTRA Assistance technology, which is said to provide a faster 'first fix' with greater GPS sensitivity indoors and in dense urban environments. The Toshiba G920 is an identical device, but it comes with A-GPS support and will be available for network carriers that support it.

The Toshiba Portege G910/G920 3" touchscreen TFT display has a wonderful WVGA resolution of 800 x 480 pixels, and the device runs on Windows Mobile 6.0 Pro. Unfortunately the initially suggested 3 megapixel camera was dropped in favor of a 2 megapixel one. That would make it somewhat hard to battle the HTC TyTN II, which has a 3 megapixel module on board. There is also no USB-host feature - a little something that made the original Toshiba G900 PocketPC an attractive feature combo.

The Toshiba Portege G910/G920 is also equipped with a biometric fingerprint scanner for security, and it also has Bluetooth support and VoIP capabilities. The processor under the hood of the G910 is yet unknown, but it's rumored to be a 528 MHz one, there is also 128MB of RAM available on board.

The Toshiba Portege G910 will become available across Europe in Q1 2008 at an approximate price of EUR 600.

Toshiba has also presented the Toshiba Portege G710 - a sleek Windows Mobile smartphone, that comes with an integrated GPS receiver. The Toshiba G710 has a messenger form factor with a full hardware QWERTY keyboard and we call it compact because it's only a tad larger than Samsung i600. Toshiba G710 has a large 2.4" TFT display with QVGA resolution. Trackball menu navigation, a 2 megapixel snapper, microSD memory card slot (up to 2GB), and stereo Bluetooth are also available.

Motorola XOOM Review - Motorola XOOM is company's first ever tablet computer. It features a healthy-sized 10.1-inch capacitive screen with a very high resolution of 1280x800, a 5MP HD camcorder (front-facing cam included) and the mandatory dual-core ARM-based Tegra 2 chipset, which will allow for full 1080p HD video playback. The device surely looks sexy, as it has a large widescreen display and a bezel that is quite thin. Naturally, most of the buzz around the Motorola XOOM comes from the fact that it's the first tablet to run Google's tablet-optimized Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system

It's actually just the same tablet with a smaller screen and without 3D sound from the speakers - which is an odd thing to say when it's supposed to be the media darling of the two.

We're not sure what really makes it a 'Media Edition' compared to the main Xoom 2, with no discernible difference apart from the couple of points noted above.

However, that's not to say we weren't impressed with the performance of the Motorola Xoom 2 ME, as it's a nice size to hold and as Motorola points out, will fit in your rear jeans pocket.

Although that does lead us to think we'd sit down and snap it at some point, or have some tactile pickpocket nab it in a heartbeat.
The design of the Xoom 2 ME is much thinner and lighter than the original Xoom, with a comfortable 386g weight offering up a pleasant experience in the hand.

With 1GB of RAM and a dual core 1.2GHz processor it whips along under the finger - we are left wondering what happened to the Tegra 2 compatibility at the moment, as everything seems to be moving to a TI chip instead.

It's got all the features of its bigger brother, including MotoCast, which allows users to sign into a remote computer to browse movies, music and other files - as long as the remote device is switched on, that is.

We trialled the service in what was, admittedly, patchy Wi-Fi but it didn't really want to load up even with a clean connection. We're less than impressed by it at the moment, but we'll reserve judgement until our full review.

At least internet browsing was a much better experience, and the dual-core processor kept things ticking along nicely - with Flash video loading up in a trice on a few sample sites.

he camera was pretty good on the Motorola Xoom 2 ME, with a swift snapper making it easy to use either the rear-facing 5MP sensor, or the front facing 1.3MP option. Photos were clear enough on the high resolution screen, and while they won't rival the likes of the iPhone 4S, are of high enough quality to capture whatever moment you're desperate to savour.
